For Anna Daan, we purchase or prepare packets of agreed food staples in Indore. Depending on the seva, a packet may include items such as rice, atta, dal or other agreed staples. Before the booking is confirmed, we tell you what will be included and how many packets will be prepared. A member of our family then personally takes the packets to a suitable temple in Indore, where they are respectfully offered to pandits or Brahmans, or through the appropriate temple setting. The exact format may vary depending on the occasion and what has been agreed with you.
We keep the description honest and avoid guaranteeing specific spiritual outcomes. Practices may vary by family, sampradaya and region.
Why Anna Daan holds a special place in the tradition
Food is one of life's most immediate needs, which is why giving food occupies an important place in the Hindu tradition of daan. The Mahabharata — particularly the Anushasana Parva's discussions of dana — gives special importance to the gift of food, because living beings depend upon food for life, strength and energy.
Giving food is ultimately about sustaining life.
At its simplest, Anna Daan is an act of sharing nourishment. It does not need to be presented as a transaction for obtaining a particular blessing.
What does Anna Daan mean at Roots & Seva?
Our current Anna Daan — a food grain & staple seva — is arranged through packets of food grains and useful staples, for example rice, atta, dal or other agreed items. It is not described as cooked-meal distribution unless that is what has actually been arranged. Before payment, we tell you exactly what each packet contains and how many packets will be prepared.
Why do families choose Anna Daan on Amavasya?
Amavasya has a long association with ancestral remembrance in Hindu tradition, and Dharmashastra traditions recognise new-moon Shraddha and offerings connected with the Pitrs. Formal Shraddha and Tarpan are distinct rites with their own procedures; Roots & Seva does not claim that an Anna Daan booking is a replacement for them. Why might someone give on Purnima?
Purnima is a recurring full-moon observance in the Hindu calendar. Depending on the month and tradition, it may be marked through vrata, worship, prayer and daan; some traditional Purnima-vrata procedures include giving food or other items and feeding a Brahmin before the fast is concluded. Can I arrange Anna Daan in memory of a parent?+
Yes. Many families arrange Anna Daan on an annual tithi or birthday in loving memory of a parent or grandparent. You give us the Sankalp name and we reference it in the acknowledgement.
What if I don't know the exact tithi?+
Share the details you know — an English date, an approximate time of year. If a specific tithi needs confirming before scheduling, we'll discuss it with you. We don't treat automatic tithi calculations as authoritative where family practice may differ.
Where is Anna Daan arranged?+
We prepare the packets in Indore and a member of our family personally takes them to a suitable temple here. Roots & Seva is intentionally local — close enough to take responsibility for what we accept.
